The original Tron movie was way ahead of its time and pioneered the use of computer graphics in motion picture. The latest movie in the Tron franchise has brought a lot of interest in the costumes and memorabilia surrounding the movie theme. A number of Tron costumes with glow lights have suddenly become popular and are selling in many outlets. However, you can create your own costume with a custom glow. You just need to know how to make the costumes glow as in the movie.
If you thought that the glow was created through special optical effects, you would be wrong. The movie used a real special device to create the glow. You can use El tape or electro luminescent tape to create the same glow effects on your costume for under $75. In the actual movie, El tape was used to create the glowing circles and panels on the actors’ outfits. You can use El panels to make your own Tron costumes and get an authentic look as seen in the movie. In fact, you can make your whole costume using El panels. You can cut and wear the costume just as they did in the movie, so that is looks exactly identical.
You might find it a little difficult to handle areas where there is gap in the tape. Instead of cutting the tape to mimic a gap, you can poke a hole in the costume and run it underneath the costume for the gap. This would ensure continuity without having to make complex wiring to handle each gap. Running a continuous tape throughout the costume is much easier than cutting them into small bits and wiring them up for continuity.
You can also use El wire for a similar but more subtle effect. The wire comes wrapped in plastic with different colors. Therefore, you can achieve glows in a variety of colors. The El wire looks similar to a speaker wire. There are some varieties that come with wings at the end which makes it easy to sew the wire onto the costume. You can also use a fabric glue to attach the wire to the costume. You can use Goop or any other clear glue to fix the wire over the costume.
The tape however is much easier to handle since it is flat and can be easily stuck to the costume than the wire. You just need to use your creativity to come up with unique designs that look great in the dark.
